A strange event happens once.
Then something else happens.
It gets a headline.
Then a reaction video.
Then a debunk.
Then a response to the debunk.
Then a documentary.
Then a podcast asks whether “they” are hiding something.
By the end of the week, the original event may be unchanged.
But its informational footprint has become enormous.
This creates one of the most important illusions in modern mystery culture:
visibility can feel like evidence.
It is not.
Visibility tells you that a claim is moving through an information system.
That is a different measurement.
Media selects for attention
News systems do not sample reality randomly.
They select.
Unusual events are newsworthy precisely because they are unusual.
A normal aircraft following a normal route is not a headline.
A mysterious light over an airport might be.
This creates a base-rate distortion.
If you consume only reported anomalies, the world begins to look much more anomalous than it is.
The media did not necessarily fabricate anything.
Selection alone changed the picture.
Novelty has transmission value
A famous 2018 Science study analyzed the diffusion of true and false news on Twitter.
In that dataset, false stories tended to spread farther, faster, deeper and more broadly than true stories.
The researchers also found that false news was more novel and evoked different emotional responses.
The finding does not establish a universal law of all media.
It was a specific platform, time period and dataset.
But it demonstrates a principle that matters for extraordinary claims:
information can win the attention competition for reasons unrelated to truth.

Nuance is expensive.
A title has seconds to communicate.
But every compression step can convert probabilistic evidence into a binary story.

Repetition creates familiarity

Argue.

The strongest evidence does not support a single-cause model in which one algorithm injects belief into passive minds.

Extraordinary claims have a built-in narrative advantage
Mystery claims often contain:
uncertainty
threat
secret knowledge
institutional conflict

authority

Those are powerful narrative ingredients.
“Unclear data remain unclear” is scientifically responsible.
It is not a satisfying ending.
This gives extraordinary claims an asymmetrical advantage in attention markets.

Publication does not validate the claim
This is a critical rule.
A claim appearing in:

does not automatically mean the institution endorses the claim.
Institutions publish allegations, testimony, unresolved findings, preliminary research and disputed interpretations all the time.
The investigator must ask:
What exactly is the publication doing?
Reporting?
Testing?
Endorsing?
Archiving?
Quoting?
Criticizing?
The logo is not the evidence.
Media skepticism can also go wrong
The opposite error is assuming that anything popular must be false.
Media attention can amplify real discoveries too.
True stories can be sensational.
Official explanations can be wrong.
Journalists can uncover genuine misconduct.
Virality is not evidence against a claim any more than it is evidence for it.
The proper move is to remove the distribution signal from the evidential signal.
“How many people saw this?”

“How strong is the evidence?”
belong in different columns.
A practical amplification audit
When a claim is everywhere, ask:
What is the original source?
How many outlets independently verified it?
How many simply repeated another outlet?
Did the headline strengthen the source claim?
Did later corrections reach the same audience?
Is virality being cited as evidence?
Are mainstream reports documenting the claim, or endorsing it?
What remains if you remove every repost and return to the first data?
This is one of the fastest ways to shrink a giant story back to its actual evidential size.
