Stonehenge is often treated as one frozen monument.
It was not.
The site changed across centuries.
Earthworks, timber, burials, bluestones, sarsens, rearrangements, and surrounding monuments formed a long cultural process.
The first Stonehenge
The earliest major monument was an earthwork enclosure.
A circular ditch and banks were created around 3000 BCE.
Inside were pits known as the Aubrey Holes.
Some contained cremated human remains.
The first phase already connected place, ceremony, and the dead before the famous stone circle existed.
The stone monument
The large sarsen setting was created mainly in the late Neolithic period, around the middle of the third millennium BCE.

Cremated remains and nearby burials show that mortuary practice mattered.
The monument stood within a landscape containing barrows, routes, settlements, river approaches, and other ceremonial sites.
The dead were part of the story.
That does not reduce Stonehenge to only a cemetery.
Gathering and community
Construction itself created social meaning.
Moving stones from distant places required coordination and relationships.
Seasonal gatherings could combine:
