Remote viewing was supposed to turn distance into information

The government history was not one single continuous project
The name Stargate has become a cultural shorthand for the entire U.S. government remote-viewing effort.
The historical record is more complicated.
The 1995 American Institutes for Research evaluation describes intelligence-community work beginning in the 1970s, with different agencies, program names and institutional homes over time.
The CIA sponsored early work.
The Defense Intelligence Agency and Army-related programs later became involved.
By the 1990s, the program being reviewed was known as Star Gate.
The important point is not the branding.
It is that remote viewing survived long enough inside government research structures to generate laboratory studies, operational tasking and a large documentary trail.
That trail is why the topic can be investigated without relying only on memoirs or internet legend.

Believer version:
The CIA proved psychic spying works.
Skeptical version:
The CIA tested nonsense and found nothing.
The record supports neither sentence cleanly.
A more accurate summary is stranger:
The U.S. government investigated remote viewing for years.
Some controlled experiments produced above-chance statistical results.
Experts disagreed about what those results meant.
The final external review did not consider paranormal causation established.
Operationally, the information was judged too vague and unreliable for intelligence use.
The program was not recommended for continuation.
That answer is less satisfying.
It is also much more informative.
“They kept funding it” is not strong evidence
Institutional persistence can feel persuasive.
If a program survived for years, surely someone high up must have seen extraordinary proof.
But organizations do not function like scientific truth machines.
Programs persist for many reasons:
- strategic uncertainty;
- internal champions;
- low relative cost;
- adversary concerns;
- intriguing outliers;
- bureaucratic momentum;
- congressional interest;
- the possibility that even a low-probability capability could matter.
The existence of a budget tells us that someone considered the question worth investigating.
It does not tell us what the answer was.
“They stopped funding it” is not absolute disproof either
The reverse shortcut is just as weak.
A program can end because a phenomenon is nonexistent.
It can also end because the effect is too weak, too inconsistent, too expensive, too difficult to operationalize, or strategically irrelevant.
In Stargate’s case, the final review was especially clear about utility.
Even if a laboratory effect existed, the intelligence product was not specific and reliable enough to use.
That is different from mathematically proving that no anomalous cognition can ever occur.
Science rarely gets that luxury.

And if a repeatable anomaly appeared?
Then the question would get more interesting, not less.
The next task would be to identify what process produces it.
The most important thing the Stargate record proves
It proves that an extraordinary claim was treated seriously enough to investigate.
It proves that the result was not a simple movie ending.
