Confirmation Bias: How the Mind Protects Its Story

How prior beliefs influence what people search for, notice, remember, and accept as evidence.

Confirmation bias is not always foolish

Contradictory evidence may include:

Confirmation bias does not prove the relationship is wrong.

It explains how one story can control the weight assigned to each observation.

The solution is not to reverse the bias and search only for negatives.

The solution is to use the same standards for both directions.

A five-part correction method

1. Write the claim precisely

Avoid vague claims such as “They do not care.”

Use a testable statement.

“They repeatedly cancel important plans without repair.”

2. Write what would count against it

A belief without a possible disconfirming observation is not being tested.

3. Search outside your normal source path

Use evidence that was not selected by the belief itself.

4. Apply equal standards

Would you accept the same quality of evidence if it supported the opposite view?

5. Update in degrees

Changing a belief does not require moving from absolute certainty to the opposite absolute certainty.

Use probabilities, confidence levels, and conditions.

The strongest question

Do not ask only:

“What supports my story?”

Ask:

“What would I expect to observe if my story were wrong?”

That question changes the search.

It does not guarantee objectivity.

It creates a real opportunity for correction.
