What Frequency Actually Means

Frequency measures how often a repeating event occurs, not what the event is, how powerful it is, or what it means.

Different oscillating systems repeat at the same measured rate while remaining physically distinct.

Frequency is one of the most used and most misunderstood words in modern wellness, physics, music, and spirituality.

People say:

  • sound has a frequency;
  • light has a frequency;
  • the brain has frequencies;
  • the Earth has frequencies;
  • emotions have frequencies;
  • everything is frequency.

Some of these statements describe measurable periodic behavior.

Others use frequency as a metaphor.

The first step is to define the quantity precisely.

Frequency measures repetition

Frequency tells you how often a repeating event occurs.

The SI unit is the hertz.

One hertz means one repetition per second.

A vibration at 10 hertz repeats ten times each second.

A tone at 440 hertz has a periodic pressure pattern that repeats 440 times each second.

Frequency describes the rate.

It does not describe the complete event.

Period is the other side of the same measurement

“My mood feels low” is an emotional description.

“My mood has a measured frequency of 20 hertz” is a scientific claim and requires a defined variable, instrument, and method.

Clarity does not remove depth.

It prevents one word from doing too many jobs.
