Most brain processing stays local and silent. Global Workspace Theory asks whether a mental content becomes conscious when it wins access to a system that can broadcast it widely enough for memory, report, planning and control.
IIT does not ask first what the brain can report. It asks what any conscious experience must be like, then tries to derive the physical structure capable of being that experience. The ambition is enormous. So are the objections.
A visual system can represent a red apple without you necessarily seeing it consciously. Higher-Order Theories ask whether awareness appears only when the mind also represents itself as being in that first-order state.
The first wave of visual activity races forward through the brain in milliseconds. Recurrent Processing Theory asks whether experience begins only when later signals turn around and the sensory system starts talking back to itself.
