Ten sources can secretly be one source

You encounter a striking claim.

A post links to a blog.

The blog cites a video.

The video references a researcher.

Another article quotes the first blog.

A third article says “multiple reports.”

A podcast repeats the story.

A screenshot removes the original link.

A social post says the claim is “well documented.”

Now you search for it.

Pages of results appear.

It feels corroborated.

But trace every branch backward and something strange can happen.

They all terminate at the same place.

One interview.

One paper.

One anonymous post.

One misunderstood paragraph.

One person.

The information has multiplied.

The evidence has not.

DarkBrain uses source laundering as a practical label for this transformation.

The term describes a pattern, not one official diagnosis

“Source laundering” is used in journalism, intelligence discussions and misinformation analysis, but it is not one single standardized psychological construct with one agreed experimental definition.

So DarkBrain should be precise.

By source laundering we mean:

a process in which information becomes detached from the quality, uncertainty or identity of its original source as it passes through secondary sources, eventually acquiring an appearance of independent authority.

Several well-established research areas help explain the process:

  • citation distortion;
  • source-memory failure;
  • repetition and illusory truth;
  • credibility transfer;
  • information cascades;
  • source-amnesia effects;
  • selective citation.

The label is convenient.

The mechanisms are real.

A scientific case shows how authority can grow without new data

In 2009, neurologist Steven Greenberg published an extraordinary analysis in The BMJ.

He reconstructed a citation network around a biomedical claim.

The network contained 242 papers and 675 citations.

On the surface, the size of the literature made the claim look highly established.

But Greenberg found several distortions.

Critical papers were under-cited.

Supportive interpretations were amplified.

Papers with no new data repeated the claim.

Hypotheses were sometimes transformed into statements of fact through chains of citation.

He called one process citation transmutation.

A possibility enters one paper.

Later papers cite it.

Eventually the wording loses uncertainty.

The literature starts saying:

“X occurs”

where the original evidence had really said:

“X may occur.”

That is source laundering in miniature.

Authority can be social before it is evidential

A citation has at least two functions.

It tells you where information came from.

And it signals:

Someone else already handled this.

That second function saves enormous time.

No researcher can personally reproduce every experiment they cite.

No journalist can independently verify every background fact from first principles.

Modern knowledge depends on trust chains.

That is not a defect.

The problem is that a trust chain can preserve authority more easily than it preserves nuance.

Each retelling can inherit confidence from the existence of the previous citation.

The disappearing qualifier

Watch what happens to language.

Original source:

Secondary article:

> “Researchers found evidence consistent with…”

Blog:

> “Research shows…”

Video:

> “Scientists discovered…”

Social post:

> “This has been proven.”

No one necessarily fabricated the final sentence deliberately.

Confidence increased through compression.

Cautious phrases are expensive.

They take space.

They weaken headlines.

They complicate stories.

So uncertainty gets shaved away.

By the time the statement reaches the reader, the original probability has become a fact.

Repetition adds another layer

The illusory truth effect is one of the most robust findings in cognitive psychology.

Repeated statements tend to be judged as more truthful than novel statements.

A 2024 review found that repetition can increase belief even in misinformation, implausible claims and claims contradicting prior knowledge.

A 2026 meta-analysis of 182 studies and 366 effect sizes still found a reliable, though heterogeneous, effect after correction for small-study effects.

This matters for source laundering because repetition and independence are easy to confuse.

Seeing the same claim on ten websites feels like ten observations.

Psychologically, it is ten exposures.

Epistemically, it may still be one observation.

Repetition can even improve the source’s credibility

A 2025 set of preregistered experiments went one step further.

Researchers found that repeated statements could increase not only perceived truth but the perceived credibility of the people associated with those statements.

This creates a feedback loop.

Claim is repeated.

Claim feels more familiar.

Familiarity increases perceived truth.

The repeated claim makes the source feel more credible.

The now-more-credible source makes future claims easier to accept.

That is how informational authority can compound.

Source memory is fragile

People often remember information better than they remember where it came from.

This is a source-monitoring problem.

Research by Linda Henkel and others found that repetition can increase perceived truth even when the original information came from an unreliable source.

If the statement remains familiar but the unreliability tag is forgotten, the brain retains the easier part:

I have heard this before.

That feeling can be misread as:

I know this.

A 2024 study pushed this further.

Participants were more likely to believe they already knew information after it had merely been repeated.

The memory of recent exposure could be mistaken for pre-existing knowledge.

That is almost a laboratory version of how a claim starts feeling “common knowledge.”

Screenshots are perfect laundering machines

A screenshot often removes provenance.

You see:

a headline;

a quote;

a graph;

a paragraph;

a social post.

The surrounding article is gone.

The date is gone.

The link is gone.

The correction is gone.

The methodological section is gone.

The screenshot may be authentic.

But authenticity of the screenshot is not authenticity of the interpretation.

A true image can carry a false claim.

This is one reason source tracing should begin with the original context, not with visual familiarity.

“Reported by multiple outlets” can be meaningless

Imagine a local anonymous account posts a claim.

Outlet A reports:

“Users online are claiming…”

Outlet B cites Outlet A.

Outlet C says “multiple outlets have reported…”

A creator then says:

“This is now being reported everywhere.”

The apparent source count has risen from one to four.

The number of independent observations remains zero.

This is a simple but powerful distinction:

source count is not independence count.

Citation chains can create dead ends

Greenberg identified cases where a paper cited another paper as support, but the cited paper did not actually contain evidence for the claim.

This is sometimes called a dead-end citation.

Most readers do not follow every reference.

So a citation can operate as a visual seal of legitimacy.

The presence of the reference may be enough.

This is why DarkBrain research cannot stop at:

“Here is a study.”

For important claims we ask:

Does the study actually establish the statement we are attaching to it?

Secondary sources are not bad

This needs emphasis.

A review article can be better than an individual study.

A high-quality encyclopedia can summarize decades of scholarship.

A journalist can integrate evidence more clearly than a raw technical paper.

A systematic review can provide a stronger evidence estimate than any single trial.

The problem is not “secondary.”

The problem is unclear lineage.

A good secondary source tells you:

what is known;

how strong the evidence is;

what the limitations are;

where the primary evidence came from.

A weak secondary source merely inherits confidence.

The prestige ladder can also launder a claim upward

A claim may begin in a low-credibility setting.

Then a reputable person mentions it as an example.

Someone else cites the reputable person rather than the original claim.

Now the reputational context changes.

This does not mean reputable sources are dishonest.

They may be discussing the claim critically.

But a later retelling can strip that context.

“Professor X discussed this claim”

becomes:

“Professor X confirmed this claim.”

A citation to criticism becomes a citation to support.

The authority of the person is transferred to a position they did not endorse.

The reverse also happens: evidence can be laundered downward

A true fact can circulate through low-quality sources and become associated with them.

Then critics may reject the fact because they dislike the source presenting it.

That is another reason provenance matters.

The quality of the current messenger and the quality of the underlying evidence are related but not identical.

A terrible website can quote a real government document.

A prestigious newspaper can make an error.

Source evaluation is necessary.

Source substitution is not enough.

Why AI can make this problem better or worse

AI can summarize enormous information networks quickly.

That is useful.

It can also flatten source distinctions if used carelessly.

Five webpages repeating one claim can be summarized as:

“Multiple sources report…”

unless the research process traces them back.

The correct use of AI is not to multiply citations.

It is to reduce false independence.

Identify duplicate reporting.

Find the primary document.

Compare wording.

Surface contradiction.

Keep uncertainty attached.

  • people cannot remember source reliability;
  • every citation chain is deliberate manipulation;
  • one primary source is automatically better than multiple independent secondary analyses.

The problem is not repetition itself.

The problem is mistaking repetition for independent confirmation.
