Tablet C may contain the nearest thing to a foothold

One inscription has attracted special attention.

Rapa Nui oral tradition preserves names for nights of the Polynesian lunar month.

The Tablet C sequence includes recurring astronomical and structural patterns that have encouraged researchers to compare the glyphs with that calendar tradition.

A 2024 Oxford study revisits this material and proposes that some sequences may represent names of lunar nights and related time-reckoning expressions.

If correct, this would matter enormously.

A known semantic sequence can become a bridge between an unknown script and a known cultural system.

A piece of wood can be older than the moment someone carves it.

It may come from a long-lived tree.

It may be reused timber.

So the radiocarbon result establishes the age of the wood, not directly the age of the glyphs.

The 2024 study argues that the result is compatible with a pre-contact horizon and strengthens the possibility of independent development.

Before a script can be read, it must be recorded faithfully.

Modern technology may therefore help not by “solving” Rongorongo automatically, but by finally giving scholars a cleaner object to solve.

What would a convincing decipherment look like?

It would not begin and end with one dramatic translation.

It would establish a consistent sign inventory.

It would explain ligatures.

It would assign values that recur across different objects.

It would identify grammatical or morphological patterns.

It would connect securely with the Rapanui language or another demonstrable linguistic system.

It would explain the proposed calendar without depending on it.

And, most importantly, it would generate readings of passages that were not used to construct the key.

A decipherment must survive surprise.

Why amateur “solutions” are so easy to produce

A glyph that looks like a bird can be called “bird.”

A figure with raised arms can be called “prayer.”

A crescent-like shape can be called “moon.”

From there, a translator can create a sentence.

This feels intuitive because pictorial signs invite semantic storytelling.

But writing systems rarely work as picture captions.

An owl can represent a sound.

A plant can represent a syllable.

A human figure can be a word, classifier or phonetic element.

The visible picture is not necessarily the meaning.

This is why iconographic resemblance is a clue, not a translation.

Rongorongo remains open for a good reason

The script is not unread because scholars are not imaginative enough.

It is unread because decisive constraints are scarce.

Tiny corpus.

Uncertain sign inventory.

No confirmed bilingual text.

No living reading tradition.

Limited external anchors.

A possible lunar-calendar foothold.

A debated origin date.

Each clue helps.

None yet forces a complete solution.

That is the correct place for curiosity.
